Google’s September 2026 Search documentation updates clarify video structured data, local business queries, regional Search experiences and Search profile badges.
Google updated its Search documentation in September 2026 with changes covering video structured data, local business queries, Search profile badges and regional differences in Search experiences. While documentation updates may appear technical, they often matter to publishers because they clarify how Google’s systems understand and present different types of content.
Video structured data gets clearer documentation
Google’s September 24 documentation update added the creator property to the VideoObject documentation while noting support for author. Google also updated its explanation of supported interaction types for interactionStatistic.
VideoObject structured data helps Google understand details about videos on pages. Depending on eligibility and Google’s systems, video information can appear in Search, Video mode, Google Images and Google Discover.
The update does not mean that adding structured data guarantees enhanced visibility. Google explicitly notes that structured data makes content eligible for certain features but does not guarantee that those features will appear.
Local business queries in aggregator and supplier units
Google also updated its documentation on September 18 to say that aggregator and supplier units now support local business queries. This is relevant to businesses and websites that provide information about local services, products or suppliers.
The change illustrates how Search experiences are becoming more specialized. A user searching for a local business may encounter different result formats depending on the query, location and available data.
Regional differences matter
On September 8, Google added documentation about regional differences in Search experiences. The company notes that certain Search features can vary by country, including aggregator units, supplier units and carousels.
This matters for international websites. A page that appears one way in India may not receive exactly the same Search treatment in another market. SEO teams therefore need to consider geography rather than assuming that a single global Search experience exists.
Search profile badges
Google also added guidance on adding a Search profile badge to a website. The feature is part of Google’s broader effort to connect a person’s or organization’s Search presence with their website.
For creators, publishers and professionals, these identity and profile features are increasingly relevant because Search is not limited to traditional blue links. Google’s ecosystem includes profiles, knowledge surfaces, videos, local results and other specialized experiences.
Why documentation changes matter
Search documentation is not the same as an algorithm update. It is primarily a source of technical guidance. However, changes can reveal where Google is expanding support or clarifying how existing systems work.
For SEO professionals, the correct response is to review the updated requirements, compare them with current site implementation and test changes where appropriate. It is generally better to use Google’s documentation as a technical reference than to infer ranking changes from a documentation edit alone.
What website owners should do
Video publishers should review their VideoObject implementation, particularly required fields such as name, thumbnail URL and upload date. Local businesses should keep business information accurate and consistent. International publishers should also understand which Search features are available in their target markets.
These updates reinforce a broader trend: modern SEO increasingly involves structured data, content architecture, entity information and understanding how different Search surfaces work together.
