October 7, 2026: AI has become a mainstream part of content marketing. Ahrefs’ 2026 State of AI in Content Marketing research found that 93% of surveyed marketers use AI for content creation and 69% say they are publishing a larger share of AI-assisted content than a year ago.

AI is now a normal production tool

Marketers use AI for research, ideation, outlines, drafting, editing and platform-specific content optimization and content checks. Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini are among the leading tools reported by respondents.

More AI does not mean raw AI publishing

The research found that human review remains a major quality threshold, consistent with Google’s guidance on AI content and SEO. About two-thirds of AI users said they trust AI-written content only after human review, while only a very small share trust it without review.

This matters because generative models can produce fluent but inaccurate information, including incorrect dates, unsupported claims and invented details.

Human expertise is becoming a differentiator

As access to similar AI models becomes widespread, simply using AI provides less competitive advantage. Original research, subject expertise, first-hand information, proprietary data and editorial judgment become more valuable.

AI checking AI

More marketers are also asking AI to review AI-generated content. That can identify repetition and structural problems, but it should not replace independent fact-checking because automated reviewers can reproduce the same underlying errors.

What content teams should do

  • Use AI to accelerate research and drafting.
  • Verify important claims against reliable sources.
  • Add original analysis and expertise.
  • Remove generic filler and repetitive language.
  • Use human review for news, health, finance and other sensitive subjects.

SEO implications

Google’s updated generative-AI guidance reinforces the practical point: the important question is whether the final content is useful, accurate and created for people rather than primarily for search manipulation.

What happens next

AI-assisted publishing will continue to grow. The strongest content teams are likely to combine automation with expertise and rigorous editorial controls rather than compete only on publishing volume.
