Google’s Discover experiment places an AI-generated topic overview between some feed cards and publisher pages, making referral traffic and source visibility important metrics to monitor.
SEO & PUBLISHING | October 15, 2026 — Google is testing a “Dive deeper” experience in Discover that opens an AI-generated topic overview with links to related stories, community reactions and original reporting. The experiment could change how readers move from a Discover feed to publisher websites, making it an important development for newsrooms and content marketers.
Google Search product executive Robby Stein described the experiment on September 18. Search Engine Journal reported that the test began with video cards; Google has not published comprehensive traffic-impact figures or confirmed that the design is available to all users.
How the test works
Instead of immediately opening a publisher’s page, a user can choose “Dive deeper” to see a short AI-generated overview. The experience also surfaces links to related coverage. This may help users explore a subject quickly, but it introduces another step between discovering a story and visiting the site that produced it.
Why publishers are watching
- Referral uncertainty: Readers may get enough context from the overview and decide not to open an article, or they may use the source links to explore further. The net effect is not yet established.
- More competition for attention: A publisher’s headline and image may lead into an AI-mediated experience rather than directly to its page.
- Source visibility matters: Clear reporting, distinct expertise and genuinely useful information give readers a reason to follow through to the original article.
What digital marketers should do
- Track Discover traffic separately in Google Search Console and compare clicks and impressions over time.
- Review which pages attract Discover impressions and whether those pages also earn engaged visits and conversions.
- Use accurate, descriptive headlines and strong original images; avoid sensational headlines that the article does not support.
- Give readers a reason to visit: original reporting, useful tools, first-hand analysis, local detail, data or a fuller explanation than a short summary can provide.
- Do not attribute a traffic change to this experiment without evidence. Seasonality, news demand and other Search changes can also affect performance.
Google’s AI reporting is also evolving
Google announced dedicated generative-AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026 and said the insights were available worldwide from August 31. These reports show impressions and pages appearing in generative AI features across Search and Discover, with breakdowns such as country and date. They should be interpreted alongside ordinary clicks, engagement and business outcomes—not as a substitute for them.
What remains unknown
Google has described “Dive deeper” as an experiment. Public reporting does not yet establish its long-term rollout, the number of users who will see it or its net effect on publisher referrals. Publishers should measure their own performance rather than assume either traffic loss or traffic growth.
