HDFC Bank has appointed Anup Bagchi as its next Managing Director and CEO for a three-year term beginning October 27, 2026.
October 2, 2026: HDFC Bank has appointed Anup Bagchi as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer after receiving approval from the Reserve Bank of India.
Bagchi, currently MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, will take charge on October 27, 2026. He will succeed Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose term ends on October 26.
Bagchi’s background
Bagchi has more than three decades of experience across banking, capital markets, wealth management and insurance. He has been associated with the ICICI Group since 1992 and previously held senior roles across the financial-services sector.
Why the leadership change matters
The appointment comes during an important period for HDFC Bank, India’s largest private-sector lender. The bank has been managing leadership and governance changes while also focusing on profitability, deposits and post-merger integration priorities.
Reuters reported that the bank’s net interest margin had declined compared with earlier years, while Business Standard reported that Bagchi’s appointment is for three years, subject to shareholder approval and RBI-approved terms.
What happens next
Bagchi’s tenure begins later this month. Investors, customers and the banking industry will be watching how the new leadership approaches growth, deposits, digital banking, governance and profitability.
