IndiGo has increased fuel charges on domestic and international flights as the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) continues to climb.

The revised charges apply to new bookings made from October 6, 2026. The airline said the increase follows a sustained rise in ATF prices, with the latest monthly increase exceeding 14%.

Revised Domestic Fuel Charges

Domestic journey distance Fuel charge
Up to 500 km ₹375
1,000–1,500 km ₹900
1,501–2,000 km ₹1,150
Above 2,000 km ₹1,300

Charges vary according to route distance and international region. Reported international fuel charges range from around ₹1,000 for short SAARC routes to as much as ₹10,000 for European routes.

Why Are Fuel Charges Rising?

ATF prices have increased sharply. The Delhi benchmark was reported at about ₹137 per litre in October, following another monthly increase and a substantial rise since July.

Fuel is one of the largest variable costs for airlines. When ATF rises quickly, carriers can either absorb some of the increase, adjust fares, or introduce a fuel surcharge.

Why IndiGo Says the Increase Is Necessary

IndiGo has described the latest adjustment as a response to the sustained increase in fuel costs and said the surcharge does not fully offset the increase in its fuel expenditure.

Will Air Tickets Become More Expensive?

Passengers should expect the possibility of higher effective ticket prices, particularly on longer routes and during the festive travel season. The impact will depend on the base fare, route, demand and whether other airlines make similar adjustments.

Travellers comparing tickets should therefore look at the final payable fare rather than comparing only the headline base fare.

What It Means for Festive Travel

The timing is significant because October and the following weeks are an important travel period in India. Higher fuel costs arriving during a period of strong demand could put additional pressure on airfares.

What Passengers Can Do

  • Compare the final fare across airlines before booking.
  • Check whether a quoted fare includes the latest fuel charge.
  • Book early when travel dates are fixed, especially around major festivals.
  • Compare nearby airports and alternative travel dates when practical.
