Instagram is expanding its School Partnership Program with new communication and community features designed to help schools, students and parents stay informed. The September 29 announcement adds Channels and Notes for verified school partners and introduces school-specific features for eligible verified high school students in the United States.

What is changing

Verified school partners can now use Channels to share quick updates with followers, including parents and the wider community. School-related accounts can also use Stories and Notes for announcements, while administrators can monitor and remove those posts.

Instagram says school partners will receive prioritized handling for reports that may violate Community Standards, along with status updates when Instagram takes action.

Student communities

For verified students at participating US schools, Instagram is introducing Clubs and Teams, School Stories and Notes, and a school banner and student directory. The features are intended to create a centralized place for school-related information and activities.

Clubs and Teams can provide a hub for activities such as school sports, academic clubs and other organizations. Administrators, educators and students can participate in the relevant school community.

Verification is central

Instagram says high school students must pass a third-party verification process before joining a verified school community. The company is using UNiDAYS for verification in the US.

This approach is designed to restrict access to school communities to people who are actually connected to the participating school. Parents can also receive information through Meta’s Family Center about a teen’s school participation.

Safety and school hours

The School Partnership Program was launched with the International Society for Technology in Education and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Meta says the program was created partly to help schools report potential teen safety issues directly to Instagram.

Instagram also points to Teen Accounts and parental controls designed to limit unwanted interactions and reduce distractions during school hours.

Why the move matters

Social platforms are increasingly being used for community communication, but school-related communication carries different expectations from ordinary social posting. Accuracy, moderation and identity verification become more important when announcements concern students and parents.

The new features attempt to combine the reach of Instagram with administrative controls that make school accounts easier to identify and manage.

Current scope

Meta says nearly 17,000 schools have partnered with the program so far. The newly announced student features are specifically tied to participating schools and eligible high school students in the United States, so they should not be interpreted as a worldwide school-network feature.
