Google’s generative-AI performance reports add visibility data to Search Console. Marketers should combine those impressions with organic clicks, engagement and conversions.
SEO STRATEGY | October 15, 2026 — As search experiences incorporate AI-generated answers and summaries, marketers need to measure more than a single ranking position. Google has introduced dedicated generative-AI performance reports in Search Console that show how often a site’s pages appear in eligible AI features across Search and Discover.
What Google’s reports show
Google Search Central announced the reports on June 3, 2026, and said the insights were available to websites worldwide from August 31. The reports provide impression data, the pages appearing in AI experiences, and breakdowns such as country and date. Google’s help documentation explains that the reports may not appear for every property if there is insufficient eligible impression data.
These reports are not a complete measure of the value generated by AI search. They should be read together with standard Search Console performance, analytics and business results.
A practical measurement framework
- AI visibility: Monitor generative-AI impressions and which URLs appear in the dedicated reports.
- Organic search performance: Track clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position in the standard Performance report.
- Landing-page quality: Review engaged sessions, relevant page interactions and whether visitors continue to useful content.
- Business outcomes: Measure enquiries, sign-ups, qualified leads, purchases or other conversions that match the page’s purpose.
- Brand and assisted impact: Where measurement tools and consent allow, look for changes in branded searches, direct visits and assisted conversions—but avoid claiming causation without evidence.
How to run a useful review
- Record a baseline covering several weeks before making major changes.
- Segment pages by purpose: news, informational guides, product or service pages, and conversion pages.
- Compare AI impressions with ordinary clicks and engagement for the same pages and dates where possible.
- Investigate pages gaining visibility but not producing meaningful visits; improve the page’s unique value and next-step usefulness.
- Investigate declining clicks separately from impressions and rankings. Changes in demand, result layouts, competition and seasonality may all contribute.
- Annotate site changes and major search updates so the team can interpret movement more accurately.
What not to do
Do not treat an AI impression as a click, a lead or proof that an AI system endorsed the whole website. Do not assume that a decline in clicks proves that AI summaries caused it. Google’s reporting is an additional visibility signal, not a replacement for analytics or conversion measurement.
