Severe erosion along the Ganga in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district damaged an embankment and affected dozens of homes, with five houses and a temple reported destroyed near Mahadevpur Ghat in Raghopur village, according to The Indian Express, citing officials and PTI.

Response on the ground

Authorities deployed teams of water-resources engineers and arranged sand-filled bags, geo-bags, crates, boats and other materials to protect vulnerable stretches. Some residents were moved as a precaution after cracks appeared in houses near the riverbank.

Why erosion remains dangerous

Riverbank erosion can undermine buildings and embankments even when the water level is below an official flood-warning mark. Strong currents and changes in the river’s course can continue to destabilise the bank.

What residents should do

  • Follow evacuation instructions from local authorities.
  • Keep away from cracked riverbanks, damaged embankments and unstable structures.
  • Use official district updates for information on relief arrangements and road access.

The situation may change quickly; this report is based on published reporting available on October 11 and is not a live emergency alert.
