Google is expanding AI-driven advertising through AI Max and ads in AI Overviews, changing how advertisers approach search, targeting, creative and measurement.
October 7, 2026: Google’s advertising business is undergoing one of its biggest structural changes as AI becomes more deeply integrated into Search campaigns. AI Max, ads in AI Overviews and new AI-assisted campaign tools are changing how advertisers approach targeting, creative production and measurement.
Ads are entering the AI Search experience
Google says existing text, Shopping and Performance Max ads are eligible to appear above or below AI Overviews in markets where the feature is available. Google also currently allows eligible text and Shopping ads from existing campaigns to appear within AI Overviews on mobile and desktop in India and several other countries.
This matters because an AI Overview can answer a user’s question before the user reaches a traditional list of search results. Advertising therefore has to adapt to a search experience where the user’s journey can begin with an AI-generated synthesis rather than a conventional blue-link page.
What AI Max changes
AI Max for Search uses Google’s AI systems to expand matching opportunities, customise text and make broader use of information from an advertiser’s website and campaign inputs. Google is positioning the system as a way to find additional relevant searches while allowing advertisers to provide business and brand guardrails.
For marketers, this shifts part of the job from manually specifying every possible query toward providing accurate business information, high-quality landing pages, useful creative assets and strong conversion signals.
AI Max for Shopping
Google has also introduced AI Max for Shopping. The system uses Merchant Center feed information to better understand products and help retailers reach relevant searches.
Product data therefore becomes increasingly important. Retailers need accurate titles, descriptions, prices, availability and structured product information because AI systems depend on these signals to understand what a business sells and which products are relevant to a query.
AI Brief and natural-language campaign control
Google is rolling out AI Brief in beta to help advertisers guide AI Max for Search campaigns using everyday language. Advertisers can describe their goals and brand requirements, with the system generating campaign previews aligned with those instructions.
This is another sign that campaign management is moving toward natural-language interfaces. However, the shift does not mean marketers can abandon strategy. The AI needs clear objectives and constraints if its recommendations are to remain aligned with the business.
Measurement is becoming more important
As AI systems make more decisions about queries, creative combinations and campaign delivery, measurement becomes critical. Advertisers need to know not only whether conversions increased, but also which business signals, audiences, landing pages and creative elements contributed to that outcome.
This is particularly important as traditional keyword-level control becomes less central in some AI-driven campaign formats. The marketer’s role increasingly involves interpreting system behaviour and improving the inputs that guide it.
What Indian advertisers should know
India is already among the markets where Google says ads in AI Overviews are available. This means Indian advertisers are not watching the AI-search transition from the sidelines; the changes are directly relevant to campaigns reaching Indian users.
Businesses should review conversion tracking, website content, Merchant Center data, brand controls and creative assets. They should also monitor how campaign performance changes as AI-driven matching and placements expand.
The bigger shift in search advertising
Search advertising historically rewarded advertisers that could identify valuable keywords, write relevant ads and manage bids effectively. AI-driven search is adding another layer: advertisers must provide systems with reliable business context while allowing algorithms to discover opportunities.
The strongest marketers will therefore not necessarily be those who surrender the most control. They will be those who understand which controls still matter, which decisions can be delegated safely and which business signals the AI needs to perform well.
