Google Ads is rolling out optional channel-prioritisation and budget-allocation controls across Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen. Here's what PPC teams should review.
Google has introduced new optional campaign controls in Google Ads that let advertisers prioritise channel groups and allocate budget to secondary channels. Announced on October 14, the features are rolling out globally across Search, Shopping, Performance Max and Demand Gen.
What is changing?
Google says advertisers can categorise channel groupings by priority and set how budgets are allocated across Google inventory and partner networks, including Search partners and the Google Display Network. The aim is to provide more choice than an all-or-nothing approach to channel targeting.
Why channel prioritisation matters
Campaigns can reach customers through different surfaces, but not every advertiser values every channel equally. These controls are intended to give advertisers more influence over allocation while allowing them to test secondary channels.
What PPC managers should do
- Review channel-level reporting before changing priorities or budget allocation.
- Test adjustments on suitable campaigns and define success metrics in advance.
- Monitor conversions, cost per acquisition, conversion value and incremental performance rather than clicks alone.
- Check whether budget restrictions affect reach or learning, and document changes for fair comparisons.
The new controls do not guarantee lower costs or better performance. Results depend on campaign goals, conversion tracking, demand, bidding strategy and data quality. Availability may vary by campaign and rollout stage.
