Google has launched Universal Cart in the United States across Google Search and the Gemini app, giving shoppers one place to collect products found across multiple retailers and Google shopping experiences. Announced on October 15, 2026, the feature is designed to help people keep track of items, price changes, promotions and checkout options during the holiday shopping season.

What Universal Cart does

Google says shoppers can save products from different retailers in one cart, including items discovered in AI Mode in Search and in the Gemini app. Their saved items and shopping progress remain available when they return, reducing the need to keep track of separate tabs or screenshots.

The company says Universal Cart can also notify shoppers when prices drop or out-of-stock items become available again. It may surface relevant promotional codes and use Google Wallet information to suggest payment methods based on card benefits.

How checkout works

For supported retailers, shoppers can complete a purchase through Google Pay from the cart. They can also transfer items to a retailer’s own cart and finish checkout on the merchant’s website. Google says merchants remain the seller of record and continue to provide order confirmation and customer support.

Google lists retailers including Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and participating Shopify merchants among the supported shopping experiences. Availability depends on the merchant and checkout option.

Why this matters for e-commerce and digital marketing

Universal Cart is another step toward AI-assisted shopping, where product discovery, comparison and purchase can happen across connected digital services. For retailers, the development makes product data quality, price accuracy, inventory availability, promotions and a reliable checkout experience increasingly important.

It also creates questions for marketers to monitor: how products are discovered through AI-powered interfaces, how shoppers move from Google surfaces to merchant sites, and how referrals and conversions are attributed. The launch announcement does not establish that every retailer will receive more traffic or sales.

What retailers should review

  • Product feeds: Keep titles, descriptions, prices, availability and product identifiers accurate and up to date.
  • Checkout readiness: Review the supported payment and merchant checkout paths available to your business.
  • Promotions and inventory: Ensure discounts and stock status match what shoppers will encounter at checkout.
  • Measurement: Track product discovery, referral sessions and completed purchases where analytics and platform reporting allow.
  • Customer experience: Make returns, delivery estimates, seller identity and customer support information easy to find.

Is Universal Cart available in India?

Google’s October 15 launch announcement says Universal Cart is rolling out in the United States across Search and the Gemini app. It does not announce a launch date for India. Indian retailers and shoppers should not assume the same experience is available locally until Google confirms expansion or it appears in their accounts.

What happens next?

Google describes Universal Cart as part of its broader work on AI-assisted commerce and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). The next developments to watch are market expansion, retailer participation, checkout availability and whether merchants can measure meaningful changes in discovery and conversion.
