Google’s September 2026 transition of eligible Search campaigns to AI Max is changing how advertisers manage targeting, creative and landing-page expansion. The move is part of Google’s broader effort to make Search campaigns more responsive to complex queries while shifting more campaign decisions toward machine learning.

What is changing

AI Max is Google’s next-generation capability for Search campaigns. Google has been moving several legacy settings into the AI Max framework, including Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets and campaign-level broad-match configurations. Google says the transition is designed to help advertisers find additional relevant queries and use richer signals while retaining controls around areas such as brands, locations and text guidelines.

The transition is significant because traditional Search management has often revolved around carefully selected keywords, manually written ad variations and tightly controlled landing pages. AI Max changes that operating model by allowing Google’s systems to interpret broader intent and connect it with advertiser-provided assets and website content.

Why Google is making the shift

Search behavior is becoming less predictable. Users increasingly phrase queries conversationally, combine several requirements in one search and expect results that match intent rather than individual keywords. Google says AI Max is intended to respond to this environment by using additional signals to discover opportunities beyond a campaign’s existing keyword structure.

Google’s April 2026 announcement said eligible Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets and campaign-level broad-match settings would move toward AI Max, with the transition timeline later adjusted for Dynamic Search Ads. The company said DSA auto-upgrades would begin in February 2027, while automatically created assets and campaign-level broad-match settings continued their September 2026 transition.

Targeting is becoming more intent-driven

One of the biggest changes is the move away from thinking about Search campaigns purely as collections of keywords. AI Max can use search-term matching and broader contextual signals to identify queries that may be relevant to an advertiser’s offer.

That does not eliminate the need for keyword strategy. Instead, keyword research becomes part of a larger system that includes landing-page quality, conversion signals, audience context, exclusions and business rules. Advertisers still need to define what they do and do not want the system to pursue.

Creative is also becoming more automated

AI Max includes text customization, which can generate additional headlines and descriptions using the advertiser’s domain, landing pages, existing ads and keywords. Google says the feature combines extractive techniques with generative AI to produce assets intended to be more relevant to individual searches.

This creates an important operational change. Marketing teams increasingly need to focus on supplying strong source material rather than writing every possible variation manually. Website copy, product descriptions, value propositions and conversion-focused landing pages therefore become inputs into the advertising system.

Landing pages matter more

AI Max also supports final URL expansion, allowing Google’s systems to select relevant pages from a website when appropriate. This can increase the importance of site architecture and landing-page quality. A campaign can only benefit from automated page selection if the website contains clear, useful pages that match different customer intents.

For advertisers, this means SEO and paid-search teams have another reason to coordinate. Product pages, service pages, comparison pages and location pages can all become part of the paid-search journey when automated systems are allowed to select destinations.

What advertisers should watch

The key issue is not simply whether AI Max is enabled, but whether the campaign has enough high-quality business inputs for automation to work responsibly. Advertisers should review search-term behavior, conversion tracking, landing pages, brand controls and exclusions before and after major configuration changes.

Measurement is particularly important. A campaign may generate more traffic while producing little additional business value. Conversion definitions, qualified leads, revenue signals and customer-quality data therefore need to be reliable before automated bidding and targeting are given more responsibility.

What happens next

Google’s AI Max rollout represents a broader transition in paid search from manual configuration toward systems that interpret intent and assemble campaigns dynamically. The immediate task for advertisers is to understand which legacy settings have changed, which controls remain available and how performance should be evaluated during the transition.

Google’s official documentation notes that text customization is now part of AI Max and that campaigns using the feature are automatically upgraded to AI Max from September 2026. Google has also introduced new AI Max reporting designed to show the relationship between search terms, creative assets and landing pages.
