NEW DELHI, October 15, 2026 — India’s wholesale price inflation accelerated to 11.39% year on year in September, up from 9.92% in August, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on October 14.

Fuel and food drive price pressure

The increase was broad-based, with fuel and power, food articles and manufactured products all contributing. Fuel and power inflation rose to 25.85% in September from 22.93% in August, while inflation in manufactured products increased to 9.76% from 8.37%. The WPI food index rose to 8.66% from 7.05%, according to published reports of the official release.

Reuters reported that prices for petroleum and natural gas rose sharply, amid energy-market disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East. Higher wholesale costs can put pressure on manufacturers, transport operators and retailers, although the timing and extent of any pass-through to consumer prices varies by sector.

What it could mean for households and businesses

Wholesale inflation measures price changes at an earlier stage of the supply chain; it is not the same as retail inflation and does not mean every household item will rise by the same percentage. Businesses may face higher input costs, while the eventual effect on retail prices will depend on demand, competition, inventories, government policy and energy prices.

India’s retail inflation also increased in September, according to reports published earlier this week. The combination of higher input costs and energy-market uncertainty will remain important for policymakers and companies to monitor.

What to watch next

  • Whether fuel and commodity prices remain elevated in October.
  • How manufacturers and retailers respond to higher input costs.
  • Upcoming official inflation releases and any further monetary-policy signals from the Reserve Bank of India.
