Mohammed Afzal Khan of Banswada is feared dead near the Russia–Ukraine frontline after a fellow recruit's message, but the Indian Embassy says Russian authorities have not confirmed his death.
Kamareddy, Telangana | Updated October 13, 2026
Mohammed Afzal Khan, a 43-year-old man from Banswada in Telangana’s Kamareddy district, is feared to have died while serving near the Russia–Ukraine frontline, but his death has not been officially confirmed. His family is asking the Indian government and Embassy in Moscow to obtain verified information from Russian authorities and, if his death is confirmed, help bring his remains home.
Reports published on October 12 said the family had received information that he may have been killed. However, the Indian Embassy in Moscow has said it has not received official confirmation from Russian authorities about his whereabouts or death and has taken up the matter with Russia’s Defence Ministry. Until authorities provide confirmation, his status should be described as missing or feared dead, not confirmed dead.
What is known so far
News reports have carried accounts from relatives about his disappearance and the circumstances under which he travelled to Russia. Those accounts are important to the family’s appeal, but they do not independently establish his current location or confirm a death. Details about recruitment, travel and military service should be attributed to the reporting or family statements in which they appeared.
What happens next
The key outstanding step is an official response from Russian authorities that can be communicated to the family through Indian diplomatic channels. If confirmation is received, authorities may then address documentation, identification and repatriation procedures. Until then, unverified social-media claims or purported images should not be treated as proof.
